Excavator, Loader, Backhoe & More: Find Your Path to a Skilled, In-Demand Career
At Transport Training Centres of Canada (TTCC), we train thousands of students every year to become confident, certified heavy equipment operators. But if you’re just starting out, you might be asking:
This guide answers those questions — and helps you explore the right path for your personal career goals.
What Is a Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO)?
A heavy equipment operator is a trained professional who uses machines like excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, and graders to move earth, build roads, dig trenches, and prepare construction sites.
You’ll find HEOs working on:
- Construction and demolition projects
- Road and highway maintenance
- Underground utility installation
- Landscaping and excavation
- Municipal and mining operations
You don’t need previous experience to get started — and thanks to government funding, most students train for little to no cost.
