Why is the transmission important?
Class D trucks can have automatic or standard (manual) transmissions. When you get your DZ licence, you are not restricted to the transmission type you trained in; however, employers expect you to have trained on the transmission you will be driving.
Many municipal trucks, delivery vans, and newer commercial fleets use automatic transmissions, while older vocational or heavy-haul trucks may still require manual shifting.
If you have an employer in mind, ask which type of transmission their fleet uses. Otherwise, the safest choice is the DZ Standard Essentials Package, which trains you to drive any transmission.
