Learn to tow your trailer safely and confidently with TTCC’s AR course—perfect for work or recreation.
Ontario’s AR (Class A Restricted) licence is designed for drivers who need to tow smaller truck-trailer combinations safely and legally, without pursuing a full Class A licence. Whether you tow a horse trailer, utility trailer, RV, or contractor equipment, TTCC’s AR course gives you the skills, confidence, and road test preparation to handle your vehicle and trailer with ease.
What You Can Drive With an AR Licence
A Class AR licence allows you to tow any combination of motor vehicle and single towed vehicles where the towed vehicle exceeds 4,600 kg (10,000 lbs), including:
| Vehicle | Description | Ideal For | |
|---|---|---|---|
![]() | General-purpose utility trailers used for hauling equipment, materials, tools, ATVs, snowmobiles, or other cargo. | Contractors, homeowners, and small businesses moving tools, materials, or light machinery. | |
![]() | Bumper-pull RV trailers towed with a standard hitch (not fifth-wheel/gooseneck). | Families or individuals towing RVs for trips, or drivers needing more towing capacity than a G licence allows. | |
![]() | Single- or double-horse trailers, which typically use electric brakes rather than air brakes | Equestrian owners, riders, or farm users transporting horses or livestock. | |
| Standard passenger vehicles and light trucks normally permitted under a Class G licence, now with no weight limit on towing | Drivers hauling heavy utility or enclosed cargo trailers, tradespeople towing equipment, or anyone needing extra towing authority without a full Class A. | ||
An AR licence does not permit you to:
- Pull trailers equipped with air brakes
- Drive full-size tractor-trailers
- Operate double trailer combinations
- Train another driver on vehicles that require full Class A privileges
Ontario Requirements for a Restricted Class A Licence
To qualify for an AR licence, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a valid Ontario licence (not G1/G2 or M/M1/M2)
- Pass a vision test
- Submit a valid medical report
- Pass the Class A knowledge test
- Pass a road test in an AR-appropriate vehicle
Transmission rules: Vehicles used for your road test determine your privileges. Road testing in an automatic limits you to automatic AR vehicles, while standard transmission allows standard AR operation.
Upgrading to Full Class A
You can remove the “R” restriction by completing a road test in a full Class A vehicle configuration, including:
A trailer with a Manufacturer’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (MGVWR) of at least 4,600 kg
A full air brake system on both the truck/tractor and trailer
TTCC also offers full Class AZ MELT training for students ready to advance their commercial driving career.
